History

SVSS, which is a voluntary organistaion, was formed in the year 1999 under the initiative of one nursing staff, Ms.Draupadi Ghimiray of Chandmari, Gangtok and was formally registered by Government of Sikkim on January, 2001.
In the beginning Ms.Draupadi Ghimiray used to take the disabled patients for getting artificial limbs fixed up to Bhagwan Mahavir Sahayata Samiti in Jaipur. This initiative was supported by the then Health Minister and later on by the Chief Minister of the State when he met her in Delhi on her way to Jaipur, escorting a group of patients. A meeting was thus held between President of the BMSS(Jaipur) and the Chief Minister wherein it was decided that a camp be held in Gangtok with the help of the Samiti. The said camp was later held in STNM Hospital and almost 438 patients benefited from it. Later on it was evident that regular repairs and readjustments were required after fixing of artificial limbs so she decided to open an independent and exclusive centre at Gangtok itself. She approached the Minister for Health on that matter who helped her in establishing a centre known as “Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti” in February 1999.
The office-cum-workshop of the Samiti was first set-up at Ranipool near Gangtok on rental basis which was later shifted to Zero Point, Gangtok in August, 2004.
