SIKKIM VIKALANG SAHAYATA SAMITY – A BRIEF WRITE UP
Sikkim Vikalang Sahayata Samity is one of the most recognized voluntary organisation in this smallest State of Sikkim, which is totally dedicated towards the welfare and rehabilitation of physically challenged brethren of our society. Estb. In 1999, this organization has been sleeplessly working for the betterment and upliftment of disabled persons and specially those who are in need of Artificial Limbs and Calipers. With the conduct of various camps in all the parts of the state SVSS has identified various types of disabilities in the people of Sikkim and treated them accordingly. A well equipped rehab centre and workshop has also been established at Gangtok. Further, this organisation also acts as a mediator between disabled peoples and various agencies for getting them Employment, self help commercial ventures and providing them platform for earning their day to day livelihood.
From Feb, 2001, SVSS started making artificial limbs and till date more than 4000 limbs have been made.
From 2002, SVSS started organizing screening and treatment camps and collaborated with Bhagwan Mahavir Vikalang Centre, Jaipur, Narayan Sewa, Udaipur, NIMS Hydrabad, DRODO Delhi, Smile Train Agra and Bangalore.
In the year 2007, the samity has also started vocational training and capacity building programme for the handicapped in the field of computer training, photography, beautician training, Khada Printing, poultry farming, dairy farming, making artificial limbs and calipers etc. For this, SVSS has collaborated with State Capacity building dept.,SRDA, Agriculture & Animal Husbandary Dept, ERNET, GOI, Patanjali Yogapith of Haridwar, IT Dept. Govt. of Sikkim and many more.
Adding to this, since 2008, SVSS is engaged in identifying and treating the patients with Cleft Palate and Cleft Lips in and around the State in collaboration with an international organization, THE SMILE TRAIN, USA, supported by their Indian Counterpart. Till date more than 600 surgeries goes to the credit of SVSS.
In this sequence, a comprehensive computer training and Beautician Training camp was conducted from 6th Oct, 2010 to 31st March, 2013.
Continuing to our Endeavour, We are now having a full fledged multi purpose rehabilitation centre at Tokal Bermiok village, South Sikkim for giving training in various fields to sustain the life of differently abled persons, with the financial help from generous donors.
This present camp was organized by Society For Human Welfare And Empowerment from Gurgaon, for screening, assessment and measurement of needy patients for fitment of Artificial limbs. Around 30 patients will get benefitted from this camp.
